Celebrate Simba’s 1st Birthday!

On Sunday 9th June, Alma Park Zoo will be celebrating Simba the Dingo’s 1st Birthday.

We are sure Simba will be happy to share his presents and birthday “pupcakes” with our other Dingos, as they are also all turning a year older.  Unlike domestic dogs, Dingos only breed once a year and whelp between April – June.

Simba is a purebred dingo, and was born at the Dingo Discovery Sanctuary in Toolern Vale, Victoria. This conservation facility aims to preserve the original dingo gene pool, educate the public on their importance in the Australian ecosystem and has a future goal of reintroducing the dingo to approved habitats in collaboration with authorities.

In July last year 2012 Simba came to Alma Park Zoo to provide a best friend for our young dingo “Sandy.” He was also welcomed by our other dingos, “Summer” and “Simpson.”

Simba has grown into a handsome lad!

Dingos are a unique and relatively misunderstood species that play a key role in regulation of our native species and control of pests. Despite arriving in Australia thousands of years ago dingos are naturalised but are still not considered “native” and their future is in jeopardy due to hybridisation with feral domestic dogs. Very few pure dingos remain today.

Come to Alma Park Zoo Sunday 9th June to learn more about Dingos and help celebrate this Aussie Icon.
