Meet Bubsie – the so-called “psychic spider monkey” who has read the banana leaves and picked his winner of today’s Melbourne Cup at Flemington.

The 15-year-old cheeky chap of Alma Park Zoo, picked Cavalryman to win the race that stops a nation.

Using a high-tech scientific approach (scrunched up pieces of paper in a bucket containing grapes), Bubsie picked the UK/United Arab Emirates horse to triumph.

But with odds of $34 it will be a tough race to win for the international stayer.

Rounding off the trifecta, Bubsie has gone for American horse Lights of Heaven (trainer Peter Moody of Black Caviar fame) and Aussie horse, Sanagas (trainer Bart Cummings).

Lights of Heaven has reasonable odds at $26 and is considered one of the best local horses, after holding of race favourite Amercain (odds $5) and taking third in the Caulfield Cup. Sanagas has even worse odds than Cavalryman at $51.

Alma Park zookeeper Alison Wright, whose father was a jockey, likes Galileo’s Choice but will placing a bet on behalf of Bubsie regardless. “I would be kicking myself if he won and I didn’t!” she laughed.
