Becoming a member of this important international program was awarded based on an excellent track record of husbandry and breeding of primates, including marmosets and the Critically Endangered Cotton Top Tamarins. This international transfer of a pair of Emperor tamarins marks the passing of a complex and lengthy process.

There are few Emperor tamarins remaining in Australasian zoos, which is why an import from overseas was deemed necessary by the Species Co-ordinator. Gomez and Aya represent new genetics for the Australasian region and it is hoped they will produce offspring later this year.

Emperor tamarins are native to woodlands of the SW Amazon Basin. A sub-species (S. i. subgrisescens) includes this range and also Bolivia. In other areas such as Bolivia the IUCN classifies their status as indeterminate. Although their natural range was previously remote and this species considered relatively secure (Least Concern, IUCN), their habitat is now impacted by deforestation for logging and cattle ranching, and populations of Emperor tamarins are decreasing.

They are listed as a Threatened species in Brazil and Peru, with other populations classed as indeterminate status due to lack of data.

The Emperor tamarin breeding program at Alma Park Zoo will contribute to ex situ conservation of these small primates, ensuring captive populations continue to include a sound genetic representation and remain healthy for the future.

The Dingo (Canis lupus dingo) has become an iconic Australian animal, although it is not a native species of Australia. Dingos are an ancestor of the Asiatic wolf and were brought to Australia with visiting seafarers 5000 years ago.

An International Study in the journal Nature suggests that the Dingo may be the world’s oldest dog and are most closely related to wolves.

Alma Park Zoo is home to four Dingoes. Simba, a young male Dingo arrived at the Zoo in 2012 and is often found walking around the Zoo with his Keepers and posing for photographs with guests during Aussie Discovery Encounters.

Simba the Dingo
Phone © Teale Shapcott

The Dingo is a medium sized canine with varying coat colours from golden yellow to darker black and tan coats. It is believed that their coat colour is influenced by their habitat with golden yellow Dingoes living in sandy, desert regions and the darker coat variations being found in forestry areas.

Dingoes were first reported in the 1600s and lived alongside humans ever since. The Dingo is Australia’s largest mammalian predator, play a key role in Australia’s ecosystem being an apex predator.

Whilst a Dingo may look like a domestic dog, they have a number of physical characteristics that are different from domestic dogs which include:

Complex Vocabulary: Dingoes rarely ‘bark’. They communicate by howling, snorting and even purring.

Larger canine teeth: The canines of a Dingo are larger than a domesticated dog.

Rotating Wrists: The wrist of a Dingo is capable of rotation. This allows Dingoes can use their paws like hands ensuring their success as hunters.

Large range of vision: A Dingo can turn its head through almost 180 degrees in each direction.

Independent Nature: Dingoes are independent and highly intelligent, so they are harder and more challenging to train than domesticated dogs.

Yearly Breeding: Dingoes only breed once a year.

Habitat

Dingoes are adaptable to their environment and occupy a wide variety of habitats from coastal regions to grasslands and wooded areas as well as the extremes of tropics and arid desert zones of mainland Australia. They have never been present in Tasmania, because they arrived after the Bass Strait formed.

Purebred Dingoes are rare with wild dingoes mating with feral domestic dogs. Some of the genetically purest Dingoes are found on Fraser Island in Queensland. A recent study by the University of Western Sydney has suggested that a population of purebred Dingoes can be found on the outskirts of Sydney in New South Wales.

Simba the Dingo
Phone © Teale Shapcott

Behaviour

As with other Canids, Dingoes are a pack animal and associate in family groups, comprised of a dominant breeding pair and their young from previous years. Male dingoes are larger than females. Males weigh 12 to 20 kg (26 to 43 pounds) and females weigh 10 to 15 kg (21 to 35 pounds).

Males and females both exhibit dominance hierarchies. They breed once a year between Mar – Jun, unlike the domestic dog which can have two litters of pups annually. Dingo territory varies in size depending on the amount of available resources (food, water, shelter).

A pack will actively defend the boundary of this territory using scent marking, faecal droppings and vocalisations. As with wolves, dingos howl but do not bark. They can; however, mimic a bark that sounds similar in the presence of domestic dogs.

Diet

The Dingo is a carnivore and an apex predator in Australia. Due to the Dingoe’s natural hunting behaviour they have been widely misunderstood. Recent studies by the Western Australian Dingo Association have shown that where the Dingo is in a stable social habitation, small native species such as the Bilby, Quoll and rare wallabies survive in a natural healthy state. In areas where the Dingo populations have been controlled, the same small native species are threatened by fox and cat predation.

The Dingoes ability to turn their heads almost 360 degrees allows them to track their prey efficiently. Their rotating wrists also provide advantages with hunting. Dingoes hunt co-operatively within their territory in groups of up to 10-12 animals. Hunting in packs allow Dingoes to successfully capture large prey such as kangaroos or introduced animals such as feral pigs. Dingoes hunting alone will capture smaller mammals, birds or reptiles.

Simba the Dingo
Phone © Teale Shapcott

Threats

The Dingo has no natural predators other than crocodiles. However, the Dingo faces other threats which include:

Deforestation and loss of habitat

Persecution due to livestock predation

Loss of pure Dingoes from inter-breeding with domestic dogs.

Loss of habitat and persecution due to livestock predation are both threats facing the survival of Dingoes in the wild. The most serious impact to this species is hybridisation with domestic dogs. It is estimated that less than 10% pure dingos remain today.

Due to difficulty identifying wild dog / dingo hybrids these animals are jointly listed as Pests and required under Federal law to be controlled. Unfortunately, loss of this top order predator has flow-down effects in the ecosystem and means that feral populations of animals such as rabbits, foxes, goats and pigs can spiral out of control. Recent studies have shown that in areas where dingos are no longer present there is an overabundance of macropods, so they have a significant role in population control of native animals as well.

Today, purebred Dingoes are considered to be an animal vulnerable to extinction. In Australia, Dingoes are protected and it is illegal to own a Dingo in Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia. Much of the conservation work being conducted for Dingoes is to ensure that the species remains pure and does not inter breed with domestic dogs.

On Mothers Day 2013, we pay tribute to some of our marvelous Mothers of Alma Park Zoo who contribute to preserving the genetic diversity of their species!

Vale Greetje the Baboon

It is with great sadness that we pause to remember one of the most fantastic Mothers of Alma Park Zoo – Greetje the Baboon. Sadly, Greetje passed away earlier this year.

Greetje came from Dierenpark Emmen in the Netherlanads.

In 2009, she became the first female baboon in Australasia to successfully raise a baby in 6 years.

She had a daughter in 2009 named Layla and a son in 2011 named Tehuti. Greetje delighted the public with displaying her strong maternal instincts, never letting go of Layla’s tail. Both Tehuti and Layla still live at Alma Park Zoo & Greetje’s spirit lives on with them. She is greatly missed.

Lilith the Tasmanian Devil contributes to saving her species from extinction from the highly contagious Devil Facial Tumor Disease DFTD.

DFTD is a fatal condition in Tasmanian Devils. It is only one of three recorded cancers that spread like a contagious disease.

Tasmanian Devils contract DFTD through biting and lack of genetic diversity weakens the immune system of the Devils to naturally fight DFTD.

For this reason, breeding programs in Zoos for Tasmanian Devils is very important.

In 2012, Lilith gave birth to three very special babies.

The babies are great grand devils (children) of Devils with Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD), but they do not have the disease themselves.

Owing to their pedigree, these three females are unrelated to all other Devils on the mainland, so they play a significant role in boosting the genetic diversity of the captive Devil population.

Conchetta the Cotton Top Tamarin

In 1990, it was estimated that there were only 300-1000 Cotton Top Tamarin monkeys left in the wild. Zoo breeding programs for Cotton Top Tamarins are essential to preserve the species. Conchetta of Alma Park Zoo is doing her part with raising healthy baby Cotton Top Tamarins with her partner Manny.

Manny caring for his baby twins from Conchetta.
In 2012, Conchetta and Manny had one female baby in January and twin females in December. The little female dominated family at Alma are growing up fast and delighting guests with their antics! Manny is hoping for a son in the future!

Carla the Common Marmoset

Carla the Common Marmoset with her twins. Photo Credit: Emma Morgan

Carla is the Super Mum of Alma Park Zoo, raising 10 offspring over a period of 3 years. Like Tamarins, Marmosets are also an endangered species, so Zoo breeding programs are greatly contributing to the preservation of this species.

In the wild, the Common Marmoset live in groups of 8-10 individuals with the highest ranking male and female being the only breeding pair. Several sets of offspring always remain with the group, with the older siblings contributing to cooperative rearing of younger siblings.

These behaviours can also be viewed with Carla’s group at Alma. Carla has since had twins within the last week and the group are assisting her to care for the new arrivals. When you are next at Alma, make sure you stop by and visit Carla and her group to see her little twins!

Indian Blackbuck

Graceful and athletic, large herds of Indian Blackbucks once roamed on the plains of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. Until India’s independence in 1947, Blackbucks were the most hunted wild animal in princely states with specially trained Asiatic Cheetahs.

Excessive hunting caused the severe decline of Blackbuck herds, followed by farmers eradicating Blackbucks to protect crops. Today, the Blackbuck population has dwindled to approximately 50,000 in India and a small population of 184 in Nepal. Many of these populations are also under threat from inbreeding.

In India, Blackbucks are a protected species with heavy fines and jail terms for hunters. Alma’s Blackbucks contribute to promoting the genetic diversity of these graceful animals that once roamed in large herds.

Joeys are coming!

In the next few months, Alma will be welcoming a new Swamp Wallaby joey. Keepers were delighted to find that Megan, a female Swamp Wallaby is currently carrying a joey.

Megan is not the only expectant Mother at Alma, with three of the Northern Koala females also carrying small joeys.

If you are lucky, you may capture of glimpse of all these new bundles of joy during your next visit to Alma!

Alf the Tapir of Alma Park Zoo, is a Lowland or Brazilian Tapir. He is the only Tapir on exhibit in Queensland.

Brazilian Tapirs are distinct from other Tapirs from their large stiff mane or crest that extends from the forhead to the should.

Alf is the size of a small pony standing at 90cm tall and weighing between 200-250kg.

Alf also appears to gallop like a horse when running. His short trunk or prehensile proboscis is used to reach for leaves and fruits.

Tapirs have large teeth to grind plants and seeds. Alf has four toes on his front feet and three toes on his hind feet. These splayed toes assist him to navigate through soggy ground.

Habitat

Lowland Tapirs prefer to live close to swamps and water in the lowland forests of the River Basin and Amazon Rainforest in South America.

They are comfortable swimmers and adept at climbing mountains to create paths to larger bodies of water.

They have a large range stretching from Colombia and Venezuela in the north, to Brazil, Argentina and in the south and as far west as Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador. The highest population densities of Brazilian Tapirs can be found in areas with lush vegetation with 2,000 to 4,000mm of rainfall per year.

Brazilian tapirs prefer tropical mountain forests, but are also present in swamps and lowland forests. It can be found from sea level up to 4500 meters in elevation.

They are adept mountain climbers and sometimes create paths to larger bodies of water. They prefer to live close to water, especially rivers, and are comfortable swimmers. The highest population densities are found in areas with lush vegetation and 2,000 to 4,000 mm of rainfall per year.

Alf the Lowland Tapir enjoying his morning swim.
Photo © Teale Shapcott

Behaviour

Tapirs are generally more active at night, preferring to hide or rest during the day. If threatened by a jaguar, puma or anaconda, they will often escape to seek cover in the water.

Tapirs have a lifespan of approximately 20-30 years in the wild and up to 35 years in captivity. Tapirs begin breeding in April through to June when they are 3 years of age.

Only one newborn Tapir is produced after a gestation period of 13 months. Newborn Tapirs weigh 3-5kgs and have a dark brown coat with white stripes and spots to provide them with camouflage in the forest as they grow.

Rearing of young is accomplished completely by the female Tapir. Offspring will suckle until the mothers stop producing milk at 6-8 months following birth. Offspring stay with their mothers until they fully grown at 18 months of age.

Diet

Brazilian Tapirs are herbivores, enjoying a diet of small tree branches, shoots, aquatic plants, grasses and fruit. Their short trunk allows the Tapir to forage for aquatic plants.

Alf enjoying fruit treats.
Photo © Teale Shapcott

Threats

Lowland Tapirs are recognised as a vulnerable animals, however they are at a lower risk of extinction than other species of Tapir. Populations of wild Lowland Tapirs are are decreasing due to competition with domestic livestock, habitat destruction and poaching for meat.

Lowland Tapir populations are being fragmented by hunting, deforestation and competition with domestic livestock. The large size of the Lowland Tapir makes them a prized game animal for food and commercial sale by native and rural people of South America.

In Columbia, Tapirs are becoming endangered due to over-hunting. The wild meat industry is developing throughout South America with Tapir meat frequently being sold in city markets. In Paraguay and Argentina, Tapirs are hunted for their hides. Hides are used to make sandals that are sold to tourists as souvenirs.

Conservation

The Tapir Specialist Group was formed to develop projects to assist with reducing illegal hunting of Tapirs. Their projects include:

Establishing reserves for Tapirs

Promoting sustainable harvest of wildlife by rural hunters.

Protected reserves do exist for the Lowland Tapir, however they are sparse in some countries. Reserves that are close to human settlements do suffer from poaching, especially in remote areas when there is direct economic benefit for hunters. If hunting continues at current levels, the local extinction of the Lowland Tapirs will become a certainty.

Firstly – what does Endangered actually mean? These species meet a specific series of “listing criteria” through the IUCN, including “an observed, estimated, inferred or suspected reduction of at least 50% [population numbers] over the last 10 years or three generations, whichever is the longer.”

We found a fantastic infographic for that provides a summary of how and why animals are becoming endangered across the world.

The three primary issues that are threatening wildlife include:

Climate Change

Poaching

Habitat Loss

We celebrated Maly the Sunbear’s 5th Birthday on Sunday March 31st raising $1000 to be donated to the Free the Bears Fund!

Every year Alma celebrate the birthday of Maly the Sunbear and raise funds for Free the Bears. The Free the Bears Fund was founded in 1993 by Mary Hutton in Perth after she saw a TV segment that showed horrifying footage of Asiatic Black Bears being farmed for bile.

Since 1993, the Free the Bears Fund has successfully rescued Bears in Asia and employ strategies that include environmental education, conservation research and strengthened law enforcement to achieve their mission of protecting, preserving and enriching the lives of bears throughout the world.

The staff and volunteers of Alma Park Zoo are happy to support the objectives of the Free the Bears Fund via fund raising with special events and assisting with raising awareness of the plight of Bears in Asia.

On Sunday March 31st, Alma Park Zoo cele-BEAR-ated the 5th birthday of Maly the Sunbear with a Teddy Bears Picnic, Pin the Tongue on Maly, a Kids Colouring in Competition and of course sharing presents with Maly. Esther and Shyler where the winners of our Colouring In Competition. Congratulations Esther and Shyler!

Another highlight of the day was the Teddy Bear Health Check sessions with Dr Heather. Children and adults all brought their teddy bears to participate in the annual Teddy Bears Picnic. We were delighted to see so many Bears! We had a teddy bear with a touch of ‘sun burn’ and a senior bear aged 49 years named Ted attend the Health Checks with Dr Heather. We were delighted to see so many Teddy Bears at the Picnic and we hope to see Ted next year for his 50th year for a check up too!

Jody the Bilby will be our Animal Ambassor for the day! She is a Greater Bilby and a member of the Bandicoot family. Greater Bilbies are marsupials and are also known as Rabbit-Eared Bandicoots. Bilbies once inhabited 70% of Australia and now they are only found in tiny pockets in the Northern Territory, Western Australia and South- West Queensland. Estimated numbers tell us that there is less that 1000 animals left in Australia

What makes Franky, the new male Northern Koala at Alma so cheeky?

Franky likes to stick out his tongue to photographers! That is what makes him so cheeky!

Franky has joined Alma Park Park Zoo to add genetic diversity to the captive population of Northern Koalas as part of a koala breeding exchange program with Cooberrie Wildlife Park. Alma exchanged a male Northern Koala Cosmo, for Franky. Franky arrived last week at Alma and by all accounts, he has settled in very well to his new environment.

Franky at Alma Park Zoo
Photo © Teale Shapcott

Franky was born at Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary and is currently 6 years old. Franky has fathered koala joeys in the past and we hope to see joeys fathered by him in the future at Alma.

There are two species of Koala, the Southern Koala and the Northern Koala. Franky is a Northern Koala.

Koalas from southern climates are larger, with longer, thicker fur which is dark grey in colour with chocolate brown highlights. Bonnie and Clyde are Southern Koalas at Alma Park Zoo.

Next time you visit Alma, take your camera and see if Franky will poke his tongue out at you too!
