Here are some tips for visiting the Zoo

  • You will find it quieter if you visit during the week, from November to March, or on days when the temperature is below 60°.
  • Make sure you bring comfortable walking shoes.
  • You can bring a water bottle with you to refill at one of the water stations located throughout the Zoo.
  • Help us recycle! It’s easy to recycle with our new Recycling Program. You can place your dry waste in any clear waste bin. The bins with the black bags are for wet waste. The experts at WestRock Recycling take the dry waste to the recycling facility.
  • Make sure to pack your sunscreen.

For the safety of visitors and animals, we ask that guests adhere to our safety rules and guidelines.

  • Children should be watched at all times.
  • Students must always be with their leader. One adult chaperone must accompany every ten children.
  • Selfie sticks, balloons, hoverboards and skates, glass containers, or other objects that could injure animals are not permitted on Zoo grounds.
  • If they keep the volume low, visitors may use their radios in public areas.
  • Respectfully be quiet. Disturbing animals or other guests.
  • Except for service animals, pets are not allowed at zoos. Our collection does not have companions, emotional support or comfort animals. Your service dog should be reported to the Zoo’s ticket taker or reception.
  • Guests are prohibited from bringing alcohol on Zoo grounds.
  • Intoxication. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with a Zoo staff member if you see someone who appears drunk or on drugs and is causing disturbances or threatening harm to any animal or guest. The Zoo reserves all rights to refuse admission to any person deemed drunk or on drugs and ask them to leave. The Zoo staff can handle emergencies and issues. Please don’t call 911.
  • All guests are asked to refrain from smoking in the Zoo, except in three designated outdoor smoking areas. You can find these locations on your Zoo guide map. We appreciate your cooperation.
  • Unauthorized Drones Over Zoo Property are not permitted.
  • Please walk to ensure safety at the Zoo. Don’t run.
  • Visitors are asked to stay on paved walkways except in picnic areas. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Zoo staff if you see a guest stepping off of walkways, climbing or standing on exhibit barriers, shouting or teasing animals, throwing items into exhibits, or littering Zoo grounds.
  • Please do not pick leaves or plants for your safety.
  • Properly dressed guests are required to enter the splash park. Swimsuits and other forms of clothing are not allowed. Except in the Splash Park, shirts and shoes are not permitted.
  • Animals are not allowed to be fed in the Zoo, except where Zoo staff have approved. This is to protect the animals’ health and safety. Don’t hesitate to contact the Zoo staff if you see a Zoo guest feeding an animal.
  • Please do not approach the Zoo’s animals.
  • Contact Zoo staff immediately if you see someone in immediate danger. DO NOT TAKE RISKS WITH ANIMAL EXHIBITS. If there are dangerous animals involved, you should not attempt to rescue them. Keep an eye on the person, and call for help. Do not dial 911, as the Zoo staff can provide vital information to emergency personnel. Contact the Zoo Receptionist at 502-459-2181, ext. 0.
  • The distribution and sale of literature, goods, and services are strictly controlled. This activity must be approved by the Louisville Zoo Public Relations Department and with prior arrangements in writing.
  • No Littering. You must dispose of all trash and other unwanted materials in the designated receptacles located around the Zoo.
  • All areas of the Zoo marked Employee Only/ Restricted Access cannot be accessed by guests.
  • We do not allow any activities that would disrupt the atmosphere that the Louisville Zoo is known for. If they are disruptive to the ambience of the Louisville Zoo, we reserve all rights to refuse admission or ask them to leave. Disruptive to other guests or the Zoo’s operation. This behaviour can include, but isn’t limited to:
    • Intoxicated guests
    • Inappropriately dressed guests: The Zoo welcomes all visitors. We ask that all guests wear a shirt and pants/shorts/skirt at all times. (Except for the Splash Park, wearing shoes and shirts are not required). Guests should also avoid clothing with offensive or vulgar words or phrases printed on it.
    • Guests who get into altercations with staff and other guests.
    • Guests abuse animals or climb into animal containment areas.
    • Guests who commit a crime like shoplifting or theft.
  • Your Zoo admission is permission to use your image for educational or promotional purposes by the Zoo and its constituents. Commercial photography and filming are not permitted without the Zoo’s express permission.
